Brazil's Foreign Minister To Visit Barbados
The Foreign Minister of the Federative Republic of Brazil, His Excellency Mr. Celso Amorim, will pay an official visit to Barbados on May 17, 2005.
During the visit, the Brazilian Foreign Minister and his delegation will hold talks with the Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Mia Mottley; Senior Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Hon. Dame Billie Miller and other senior government officials on a wide range of issues aimed at promoting greater cooperation between the two countries.
Barbados and Brazil established diplomatic relations in November 1971. Brazil has a resident Embassy in Barbados while Barbados has traditionally accredited its Ambassador in Caracas as its non-resident Ambassador to Brazil.
Relations between the two countries are active and have been strengthened by the conclusion of a number of bilateral agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) Concerning Consultations on Matters of Common Interest; a Protocol of Intent for Cooperation in the Health Sector; a Technical Cooperation Agreement and an Education Cooperation Agreement. During the visit, the two countries will sign an umbrella agreement on cultural cooperation, which will enhance the cultural linkages between Barbados and Brazil.
This is the second time in six months that Minister Amorim will be in Barbados. In November 2004, the two Ministers held brief bilateral discussions at Villa Nova in the margins of a working visit by Minister Amorim for consultations with CARICOM Foreign Ministers on the situation in Haiti. In October of that same year, a Barbados delegation headed by Senior Minister, Dame Billie Miller paid an official visit to Brazil to discuss matters on the bilateral and hemispheric agenda.
The Government of Barbados attaches great importance to the upcoming visit of Minister Amorim and considers Brazil to be an important partner in advancing the development agenda of the hemisphere (END).
