SINCKLER SAYS SVEs MUST NOT CARRY BURDEN OF LIBERALISATION

“Don’t make small and vulnerable economies carry a disproportionate share of the burden of liberalisation”.

That was the clear message put forward late Tuesday night by Foreign Trade Minister Christopher Sinckler in the second round of “Green Room” negotiations on global trade talks at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Chairman, as a Caribbean Minister, I have the honour to represent the Small, Vulnerable Economies in this horizontal process. We participate in these negotiations with the clear understanding that the emphasis is still on development. Paragraph 2 of the Doha Declaration states: “We seek to place their (developing countries) needs and interests at the heart of the work programme adopted in this Declaration.”

ACS MINISTERIAL MEETING IN TRINIDAD

Matters pertaining to trade development, sustainable tourism, transport and disaster risk reduction will be discussed when the 12th Intersessional Preparatory Meeting of the Ministerial Council of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) gets under way this Friday, July 17, in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.  Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Business, the Hon. Donville Inniss, will attend the two-day event which will also focus on issues regarding the Caribbean Sea, the Common Heritage of the Peoples of the region and International Cooperation.
