Barbadian James Stuart Alexander Robertson is the most recent student in Cuba to graduate from medical school. He was among the cohort graduating from the Victoria de Girón Faculty of Medical Sciences in Havana on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Dr. Robertson began his studies in Cuba in 2018 at the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).

ELAM was established in 1999 and has as its mission to “contribute to the training of Primary Health Care physicians in diverse regions of the World”.

For the first two years, students study at ELAM and then complete their studies at one of the twenty-one other medical schools in Cuba.

Following his two years at ELAM, Dr. Robertson transferred to the Victoria de Girón Faculty of Medical Sciences, which is part of the University of Medical Sciences of Havana, where he completed his studies.  The University of Medical Sciences of Havana was established in 1728, making it one of Cuba’s oldest higher education institutions.

After seven years of studying, Dr. Robertson noted that he is still coming to terms with his accomplishment and looks to the future with optimism.

“It’s been a long journey, filled with hardships but also with immense growth. Every challenge helped shape the person I am today, and for that, I’m grateful,” he said.

Barbados currently has four other students pursuing Medicine in Cuba, including one postgraduate student.
