Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 3 hurricane, last week crossed into eastern Cuba causing widespread devastation.
There has been extensive damage to infrastructure and the agriculture sector, thousands of people have been affected with families displaced and many homes destroyed.
In the wake of this catastrophic natural disaster, and in light of the fact that Cuba is not a Member State of CARICOM and therefore does not benefit from the disaster relief mechanisms of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Government of Barbados is inviting contributions to aid in Cuba’s Hurricane Melissa relief efforts.
Barbadians are being requested to support the urgent humanitarian and infrastructure needs of Cuba by making financial contributions and / or donations of non-perishable food items. There is an urgent need for powdered milk for both adults and children, wheat flour, rice, beans and canned goods.
Commencing tomorrow – Wednesday, November 5, 2025 – donations of dry food items to Cuba can be taken to the Israel Lovell Foundation, My Lords Hill, St. Michael between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Financial contributions to Cuba can be made at the various financial institutions of Barbados using the following details:
