The UN General Assembly today adopted by a large majority a resolution calling for the end of the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba.

Speaking on behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), François Jackman, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Barbados to the United Nations, expressed support for the adoption of the resolution, and solidarity with the Cuban people.

In his remarks, Ambassador Jackman reiterated CARICOM’s attachment to international law and the UN Charter’s principles, such as non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, sovereignty and peaceful co-existence.

Ambassador Jackman restated CARICOM’s calls for the removal of Cuba from the United States’ list of sponsors of terrorism, which has hindered the island’s ability to sustainably develop and attract the financial investment needed to do so, especially in light of worsening impacts of climate change.

He also highlighted the strong historical friendship between CARICOM and Cuba: “CARICOM’s partnership with Cuba is one of profound friendship – born of mutual respect, solidarity, and a shared vision for development. Through this partnership, our nations have benefited from educational, cultural, and technical exchanges through exchanges and collaborations in culture, medicine, education, and technology.”

This is the 33rd vote on this resolution, which has historically garnered near universal approval with few votes against. The resolution is based on a report from the UN (2025 UN report on Cuba) and was adopted by 165 votes in favor, 7 against, and 12 abstentions.
