Barbados’ High Commissioner to Ghana, Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, presented her Letters of Credence as High Commissioner Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday, December 4.

The ceremony marked an important milestone in the longstanding bilateral relationship between Barbados and Nigeria, which officially established diplomatic ties in 1970.

This relationship has been further supported over the years by Barbados’ Honorary Consul in Nigeria, distinguished business leader Tunde Folawiyo, who continues to play a constructive role in strengthening cooperation.

During the ceremony at the Presidential Villa at the Federal Capital, Abuja, Nigeria, High Commissioner Bynoe-Sutherland received a warm welcome from President Tinubu; Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and senior Nigerian government officials. Both countries’ national anthems were played, and the High Commissioner participated in a ceremonial inspection of the Guard.

The presentation of credentials formally empowers the High Commissioner to advance Barbados’ interests in Nigeria and to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education, culture, health partnerships, and people-to-people exchanges.

Reflecting on the moment, High Commissioner Bynoe-Sutherland remarked: “As the national anthem played, I felt the weight and enormous pride of marking this historic moment for the Barbados-Nigeria relationship. We stand ready to deepen existing initiatives underway and will continue to expand our West African footprint.

“I am appreciative of Senior Minister Kerrie Symmonds and the committed teams at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Barbados and at the High Commission, whose dedication makes achievements like this possible.”

Mrs. Bynoe-Sutherland is also accredited as Ambassador to Liberia.
