Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams, paid a courtesy call on Cuba’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, while he was in Cuba attending an intensive programme of consultations with Cuba’s National General Staff of Civil Defense.
The meeting, which was held last Friday, May 9, at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, concluded a week-long official visit to Cuba.
Deputy Foreign Minister Vidal told Minister Abrahams that her country deeply appreciates the vocal and consistent support which Barbados and other CARICOM countries have demonstrated in relation to Cuba.
She singled out Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley for the courageous stance that she and other regional leaders took when threatened with sanctions over the issue of the employment of Cuban medical brigades.
Ms. Vidal stated that Cuba will always appreciate the role which the first four CARICOM independent countries played in ending the diplomatic isolation of Cuba when they established diplomatic relations in 1972. She added that CARICOM continues to be a staunch ally of Cuba during this period when there is a new thrust to isolate the country.
Mr. Abrahams reiterated Barbados’ commitment to its principle of “friends of all and satellites of none”, and its sovereign right to establish relations with other countries.
The Minister thanked Cuba for its invaluable assistance to Barbados and stressed the importance of continued collaboration in several areas of mutual benefit. He was accompanied on his visit by Barbados’ Ambassador to Cuba, Dr. Sharon Marshall, and First Secretary, Disa Lewis.
